Come join us for our first tour of the 2019 high season. Tazaungdaing festival marks the end of the rainy season in Myanmar and to celebrate they send massive fireworks laden hot air balloons up into the night's sky. This trip is scheduled to pass thru Shan State, where all the action is happening, during the festival time. We will start the tour in Mandalay, go West to Bagan and Mount Popa, South to Naypyitaw, East into Shan State, North to Nawnghkio and Pyin Oo Lwin before turning back to Mandalay. We'll be riding the reliable HONDA CRF250L motorcycles which will be perfect for the mixed terrain on our trip.
Day 1 Nov 5. Arrive Mandalay, Short tour of city.
Welsome to Mandalay! We'll get you at the airport and bring you to the hotel to meet the other riders and bikes. We will have a short warm up ride around town to get used to the traffic and Myanmar way of driving.
Day 2 Nov 6 Mandalay to Bagan 190km sealed roads.
We will leave Mandalay and head southwest along sealed and gravel roads to the anient capital of Bagan. We will arrive in the UNESCO heritage site in time for some sunset photos before we get to the hotel.
Day 3 Nov 7. Bagan morning tour then short 50km ride to Mount Popa
We will have the morning and early afternoon to explore the multitude of Bagan temples by ebike, Tuk Tuk or motorcycle with our local expert guide who will be able to explain some of the amazing history of this magical place. After the tour we'll suite up for a short 50km ride to the volcanic Mount Popa.
Day 4 Nov 8. Mount Popa to the weird new capital of Naypyitaw. 250km
We go south on smooth winding hilly roads for the first 150km of the day and then zigzag on some amazingly fun serpentine roads across the Bago Yoma mountain range to the outskirts of Naypyitaw. As we enter the geographically large, albeit empty, city we'll be riding on wide concrete boulevards that feel very out of place in a country like Myanmar. We will stay at one of the many large, pretentious hotels that never quite reached their full potential.
Day 5 Nov 9.Naypyitaw to Inle lake. 240km
Today we'll be on more crazy wide roads as we escape the expanse of Naypyitaw, We will then rocket up some amazing narrow and windy roads onto the Shan plateau at about 1000m above sea level. Once we make it up into Shan State we'll make our way thru a patchwork of fields and small rural villages until we get to INne Lake.
Day 6. Nov 10. Morning boat tour on the lake. Taunggyi fire balloon festival at night.
A trip to Inle wouldn't be complete without a boat trip on the lake. Make sure you wear earplugs as our boat is powered by a large single cylinder, diesel engine without a proper exhaust that can leave your ears ringing for hours. We will explore the lake and take in some of the unique culture and traditions of the the local Intha community. In the evening we'll take the truck up into Taunggyi to experience a firworks show unlike any other.
Day 7. Nov 11. Inle to nawnghkio. 240km
Hopefully we got enough sleep after the festival because we got a big day today. We are going straight north to the Shan town of Nawnghkio. We will pass the military town of Lawksawk and then ride a fairly quiet road thru Danu, Shan, Palaung and Nepali villages to Nawnghkio.
Day 8. Nov 12. Morning train ride. Then short motorcycle ride to pyin oo lwin. 60km
This morning we have a break from the bikes ad we take a train over the 119 year old Gokteik Viaduct. Once we get over the bridge we will hop off and take the next train back over the bridge back to Nawnghkio, and the bikes. We will then have a short,60km, ride to the British hill station of Pyin oo Lwin. We should have time for an evening stroll in the botanical gardens before dinner.
Day 9. Nov 13. Pyin oo lwin to Mandalay 100km
Our last day will be a more relaxed ride down the Shan plateau and back to the central plains of Myanmar. We will ride down a spectacular deserted back road to topaz blue waterfalls for a swim before arriving in Mandalay. we'll have an evening farewell dinner at a local BBQ restaurant/ Beer station.
Day 10. Nov14 End of tour. Airport drop off
What??? the trip is over... but it just started? Time to get back to reality and the airport/bus station/ train station. We hope you have created some (positive) everlasting memories of our wacky time in Myanmar.
